Types of Warts
Common Warts
The most common type: raised, hard, rough growths with an irregular surface. They appear on the hands, fingers, around the nails, elbows and knees. They frequently affect children and adolescents.
Plantar Warts
They appear on the sole of the foot and grow "inwards". They are often painful under pressure. They can be distinguished from calluses by the small black dots in the centre (thrombosed capillaries).
Flat Warts
Small, slightly raised, the same colour as the skin. Frequent on the face, backs of the hands, knees. Common in children, they tend to appear in clusters.
Filiform Warts
Thin, elongated growths, similar to threads. Frequent on the face, eyelids and neck.
Genital Warts (Condylomas)
Caused by specific strains of HPV transmitted sexually. See the dedicated page on genital warts.
Available Treatments
Cryotherapy with Liquid Nitrogen
The first-choice technique. Liquid nitrogen freezes the infected cells. Quick, generally well tolerated, it may require several sessions 2-3 weeks apart.
Diathermocoagulation (DTC)
Destruction with an electrosurgical device under local anaesthetic. For larger and filiform warts, and cases resistant to cryotherapy.
Curettage
Mechanical removal with a curette, under local anaesthetic. Often combined with DTC.
Topical Treatments
For children and multiple warts: high-concentration salicylic acid, lactic acid, 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod.
CO2 Laser
For delicate locations or resistant warts.
For children, the choice of treatment requires particular care. See also paediatric dermatology.
