Cryotherapy in Cagliari
Liquid nitrogen treatment for warts and benign skin lesions
A fast outpatient treatment with liquid nitrogen for warts, seborrhoeic and actinic keratoses, skin tags and other benign skin lesions. Performed by a dermatologist at Centro Eudermia in Cagliari, with over 30 years of experience.
- Fast outpatient procedure, no anaesthesia required
- Suitable for children and adults alike
- Excellent cosmetic results
- Versatile — for a wide range of lesions
How Cryotherapy Works
Liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion using a dedicated spray (cryospray) or a soaked cotton swab. At -196°C, the nitrogen causes rapid freezing of the cells, forming intracellular and extracellular ice crystals that destroy them. The surrounding healthy skin is spared thanks to the precision of the application.
In the days following the treatment, a small blister or crust forms, which detaches spontaneously within 1-2 weeks, revealing the new skin underneath.
Indications
Viral Lesions
- Common warts on the hands and other areas (see warts)
- Plantar warts (foot "verrucas")
- Flat and filiform warts
- Molluscum contagiosum
- Genital warts (condylomata acuminata) in selected cases (see genital warts)
Keratotic Lesions
- Seborrhoeic keratoses — benign lesions, very common after the age of 40
- Actinic keratoses — precancerous lesions (see also photodynamic therapy)
Other Indications
- Small skin tags
- Small superficial angiomas and pyogenic granulomas
- Solar lentigines in selected cases
For larger or deeper lesions, diathermocoagulation or dermatologic surgery are preferable.
How the Session Works
Preliminary Assessment
Every lesion is clinically assessed before treatment, to confirm the diagnosis and rule out suspicious lesions. Dermoscopy is an integral part of the assessment.
The Procedure
Liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion for a few seconds (5-30 seconds), generally in 2 freeze cycles separated by a thaw pause. Total duration: 5-15 minutes. You feel an intense cold sensation, generally well tolerated.
After the Treatment
- • A small blister forms that develops into a crust
- • The crust detaches spontaneously within 7-14 days
- • Do not remove the crust manually
- • Protect from the sun with SPF 50+
How Many Sessions Are Needed
Seborrhoeic keratoses: often 1 session is enough
Small common warts: 1-3 sessions, 2-3 weeks apart
Deep plantar warts: 3-8 sessions
Actinic keratoses: 1-2 sessions, with possible follow-up
