Diathermocoagulation in Cagliari: Skin Lesion Removal
Surgical precision, outpatient procedures.
Diathermocoagulation is a technique that uses high-frequency electrical current to remove superficial skin lesions such as skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, cherry angiomas and dilated capillaries.
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Local anaesthesia, outpatient procedure
- Ideal for superficial benign lesions
- Immediate, natural aesthetic result
How Diathermocoagulation Works
DTC uses an electrosurgical unit (a device that generates high-frequency electrical current, over 500 kHz) through a small pointed electrode. When the electrode is applied to the lesion, the current causes localised heating that leads to the vaporisation or coagulation of the tissue.
Unlike cutting with a traditional scalpel, DTC simultaneously produces haemostasis (closure of the small blood vessels), keeping bleeding to a minimum.
Main Indications
Raised Lesions
- Skin tags (acrochordons) — very common on the neck, armpits and eyelids
- Seborrhoeic keratoses — benign pigmented lesions appearing after the age of 40
- Common, plantar and filiform warts
- Genital warts (condylomata acuminata)
- Molluscum contagiosum in selected cases
Superficial Vascular Lesions
- Cherry angiomas — common red vascular lesions appearing after the age of 40
- Facial telangiectasias
- Small pyogenic granulomas
Other Indications
- Xanthelasma (yellowish deposits on the eyelids)
- Sebaceous hyperplasia
- Syringomas and small skin tags
For large or deep lesions, traditional dermatological surgery with excision and suturing is preferable.
How the Procedure Is Performed
Local Anaesthesia
For most procedures a local anaesthetic is used, given as a small injection of lidocaine. For very small lesions EMLA cream alone may be enough. The anaesthesia makes the procedure completely painless.
The Procedure
The electrode is applied to the lesion and — within a few seconds — the lesion is removed or vaporised. Duration: from a few minutes up to 30-45 minutes for multiple lesions.
After the Treatment
- • A small scab forms and falls off in 7-14 days
- • Keep the area clean and dry
- • Apply antibiotic/healing ointment if prescribed
- • Protect from the sun with SPF 50+
