STD Clinic in Cagliari: Venereology Consultation and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections
Venereology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Historically closely linked to dermatology, venereology calls for a specialist, confidential and non-judgemental approach. At Centro Eudermia in Cagliari, Dr Alessandra Guicciardi, dermatologist and venereologist, handles the diagnosis and treatment of all the main STIs with over 30 years of experience and the utmost confidentiality.
When to See a Venereologist
- You have suspicious symptoms: lesions, blisters, ulcers or rashes on the genitals; unusual discharge; burning or pain when urinating; persistent itching
- You have had a risky encounter (unprotected intercourse) and want a precautionary check
- Your partner has been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection
- You are starting a new relationship and want complete screening
- You want a periodic check if you are at higher risk of exposure
- You have noticed genital warts (condylomata) that may be caused by HPV
Many STIs are silent in the early stages β they cause no obvious symptoms β but if left untreated they can have serious consequences. Early diagnosis is essential.
The Main Infections Treated
Viral Infections
HPV and Genital Warts
The most widespread sexually transmitted viral infection in the world. It causes growths known as condylomata acuminata (genital warts). There are low-risk strains and high-risk, cancer-causing (oncogenic) strains.
Genital Herpes (HSV-2)
A chronic viral infection with recurrent episodes of painful blisters and ulcers. Antiviral therapy can control symptoms and reduce recurrences.
Molluscum Contagiosum
A benign viral infection with small pearly papules. Treatable with curettage, cryotherapy or topical therapies.
Bacterial Infections
Chlamydia
One of the most common bacterial STIs, often asymptomatic. If left untreated it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
Gonorrhoea
A bacterial STI that can affect the urethra, cervix, rectum and pharynx. Curable with antibiotics.
Syphilis
An STI that progresses through distinct stages and produces characteristic skin signs. It is treated with penicillin.
