What Genital Warts Are
Genital warts (condylomata acuminata) are skin or mucosal growths ranging in colour from pink to greyish, often described as "cockscomb" or "cauliflower" shaped. They appear in the anogenital areas:
- • In men: glans, foreskin, shaft of the penis, scrotum, perianal area
- • In women: vulva, perineum, perianal area, vagina, cervix
They are caused by low oncogenic-risk strains of HPV, mainly HPV-6 and HPV-11.
How HPV Is Transmitted
- Condoms reduce but do not completely eliminate the risk of transmission
- A person can be an asymptomatic carrier of HPV for a long time
- The incubation period ranges from 2 weeks to 8 months, sometimes longer
- A person may clear the virus spontaneously thanks to their immune response
- The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) prevents infection from the most common strains, but does not cure infections that are already present
Treatment Options
The aim is to remove the visible lesions, reduce the viral load and the risk of transmission.
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen
Freezing of the lesions. Painless or mildly uncomfortable, it may require several sessions. First choice for many presentations.
Diathermocoagulation (DTC)
Destruction using an electrosurgical scalpel. Indicated for multiple or larger lesions. Performed under local anaesthetic.
CO2 laser
Laser destruction, indicated for extensive cases or particular locations (mucous membranes).
Surgical removal
For large lesions or for histological examination.
